Plyometric training is a type of exercise training that requires individuals to jump, hop, bound and/or skip. Plyometric movements can be found in all sports whether it be jumping or running.
Plyometrics has been seen to improve:
- Strength
- Speed
- Power
- Change of Direction Speed
- Balance
- Jumping
- Throwing
- Kicking
- Bone density
- Balance
Plyometrics involve the use of a specialised muscle action called the “stretch-shortening cycle”. This is where there is an eccentric muscle contraction (muscle length increasing) quickly followed by a transitional period and then a concentric muscle contraction (muscle length decreasing).
Overall, plyometrics are a great form of training for all types of athletes. It focuses on short, sharp and powerful movements that are used within all sports and can be beneficial to all athletes.
